Why do we go to movies together? After all, we cannot talk during the movie. If we were not emotional creatures, we might as well simply say, “Dear, please go see this movie, and I will also see it, and then we will discuss it.”

Yet seeing a movie together feels very different than having seen the same movie.

Many of us enjoy having a running partner or workout partner, although our partners do not actually lift the weight or push us along the trail. Yet in subtle ways having a workout partner changes the experience. You work out more consistently because you don’t want to let your partner down. Your partner looks out for you if you slip or strain yourself.

Social facilitation is the tendency for people to perform differently when in the presence of others than when alone. There is some evidence that people perform simple tasks better in the presence of others and complex tasks more slowly.

Meditation is not easy; but it is perhaps the opposite of complex. Meditation is simple.

Wacuri allows you to turn meditation into a shared experience. You do it together. An essential part of the wacuri experience is the ability to converse together after listening together to a guided meditation. It grew out of the joint meditation of the founders of wacuri, and their desire to share the experience they had meditating together.

My personal experience with wacuri has been that I take it more seriously when I do a partner-based meditation than when I meditate alone. Having a partner makes me more likely to consistently meditate. I feel closer to the people I meditate with afterwards.

This does not mean that I always meditate well.  Sometimes my partner finished a meditation excited and refreshed and I am nodding asleep. Sometimes I am distracted and unable to stop the distractions. Not all of the guided meditations absorb me as much as others.

Yet I have come to believe that partner-based meditation is a valuable exercise. I think it might particularly appeal to people who have a hard time getting started in meditation, either because they are too busy or too inexperienced.
